A total of 76 organizations in Hennepin County won 2013 Wellness by Design Awards for
excellence in promoting worksite wellness. The awards recognize employers who make
employee health a priority through creative and effective wellness policies and programs.
Hennepin County Board Chairman Mike Opat, spoke at the award ceremony on June 18
and noted that continued rises in the cost of employer-funded health care are not only
unsustainable, but they threaten the overall livelihood of every employer including the county.
"No matter how well we decision makers try to manage this process, we will ultimately fail
unless we find ways to reduce the demand for health services," he said. "I believe that the
answer lies in health promotion and disease management practices like the ones our 76
winners are implementing in their organizations."
Wellness by Design Awards are presented in four award levels to Hennepin County work
sites that demonstrate accomplishments in management support, wellness infrastructure,
assessment and evaluation, supportive environments, communication and engagement, and
programs and interventions.
